Volunteers Start Water Monitoring
The River Yealm Flows through the six Parish Councils of Wembury, Brixton, Yealmpton, Newton and Noss, Cornwood and Sparkwell. They have come together with local organisations as the River Yealm Water Quality Group to discuss how best to establish the extent and sources of pollution and how it might be mitigated. With cuts to their budget the Environment Agency (EA) has struggled to maintain it’s programme of monitoring so this is where we can help.
The YEM is helping to co-ordinate sampling along the length of the river as part of the Westcountry Rivers (WRT) Citizen Science Investigation. More than 40 committed volunteers have been trained to sample 23 sites on a monthly basis for the coming years. All the above parishes have donated funds to support this work plus the purchase of a continuous monitor which will provide real-time alerts of pollution in the river.
